Dean and his wife Karen represent the fourth generation to operate the family ranch. Dean and Karen have four children, Lauren, Paul, Jacob, and Katie. Dean's great grandparents homesteaded in the early 1900s north of Baker, at Ollie. The homestead shack is part of the existing ranch house. The ranch consists of 1,000 Simmental/Angus cows and 700 yearling heifers. The yearlings are developed and sold as bred heifers. The operation extensively uses artificial insemination. The AI sired steer calves are currently part of a feeding trial involving Montana State University and the American Simmental Association. The ranch utilizes sprinkler pivots for alfalfa hay near Glendive.
Dean graduated from Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo with a business/finance degree. He returned home in 1994 and is currently employed by the Bank of Baker in the loan department. Dean was the Intercollegiate steer wrestling national champion while at Cal Poly. He qualified three times for the PRCA National Finals Rodeo in steer wrestling.
